Mr. Substitute functions as a backup substitute maintenance engineer when Mr. Maintenance Engineer is unavailable. To some extent, he is also able to translate for Violet. A green humanoid alien with no nose and clawlike hands, he is almost identical to Mr. Maintenance Engineer, except for the fact that he doesn't wear a hat.
